Ms Jackie Gross Extreme Huntress

Wed ,21/12/2011

Season’s greetings to my friends, I hope this blog entry finds you doing well!!!

In the spirit of doing something for others, I thought I would introduce a young lady to you. While her needs are not quite what you would expect with a request like this, your involvement could have a long-term impact in the lives of many through this. I have come to know Ms Jacquelyn Gross, who is a finalist in the Extreme Huntress contest. In this, these 10 contestants have their bio posted on the Extreme Huntress website (listed below), where folks can cast an on-line vote. Voting runs through January 1, 2012

I have chosen to support “Jackie” and her quest for one basic reason– she is the real deal!!! Jackie is an extreme hunter, yet, also, one of the most polite people you’d ever meet.

Jackie doesn’t boast of banner names or brands, only a true love of the outdoors. From fishing for marlin off the Gulf Coast to duck hunting the bayous of Louisiana, chasing tom cats in the Colorado Rockies to hunting antelope on the desert floors of Wyoming, Jackie’s passion for the sport continually drives her to seek out the next extreme adventure.

My involvement is this simple: I believe in this young lady and her quest to bring more attention to women in the outdoors. It is my humble opinion that should Ms Gross win this title, she would do far more to further the sport of humting & fishing than the sport could ever give to her.

By now you know that I don’t get involved unless I believe there is a real purpose. My friends and I believe we can make a difference by supporting Ms Gross. We ask you to join us.

Voting is a simple 1, 2, 3 and takes less than 30 seconds. It does ask for your email, to which you can opt out after voting, and you do not receive any emails afterwards–I have checked.

If, like me, you have a strong desire to promote the sport of hunting and the great outdoors, recognizing the importance of individual participation, be it youth, families, men and women in the outdoors, take a moment and review the cast of contestants in the Extreme Huntress Competition. I am sure you’ll come to realize that Jacquelyn Gross is truly a winner.

Thank you, and Happy Holidays to you and yours!!!

A Day With The Duckman & The WOW Program

Thu ,17/11/2011

Spent the day with The Duckman at the Bear River Bird Refuge Visiter Center, and the Venture Academy of Slaterville Utah, learning about wood ducks. During this two day program, 3rd, 4th & 5th graders were given the opportunities to work with the Wild Over Wood Ducks (WOW) nesting program in a hands on environment.

Cindy McDonald Contos

Sat ,29/10/2011

In early April of 2011, I was made aware of a former classmate, Cindy McDonald Contos and her conditions with breast cancer. With a little help from FaceBook, I was easily able to track down this high school friend and learn more about here story.

Cindy and her husband Tim (pictured above) and her story:

Thousands of people converge at the Gateway Center in down town Salt Lake City for this annual event.

Locating your team in this sea of pink and white can be very chaotic.

20111029-123019.jpg
A little texting and sharp eyes, we where able to locate Cindy and her following.

After a few good laughs, I dawn my new team shirt and became one with the crowd.

If you are at all sensitive to words or innuendos regarding the upper portions of the female annadomy, best stay home because these folks are very creative in there efforts to educate.

20111029-124523.jpg
With a little meet and great, the stories become so real as visit with these lady’s and learn of their trial, each of them carrying a series of the Breast Cancer Awareness symbols to show the world of their strength and abilities to survive breast cancer: This young lady respectfully displaying 36 years…what an amazing women.

20111029-125450.jpg
Here is another photo that speaks of a survivor, her friends and family rallying around her, celebrating life. With so many people supporting the cause, it becomes apparent just how many people’s live that breast cancer has and will effect.

Having grandmothers, a sister, relatives and close friends that have battled with breast cancer, it is amazing to see how these people have chosen to openly deal with and try to educate the public as they “race” to find a cure.

Cody Anderson 5K

MARRIOTT-SLATERVILLE – For the past five years, Cody and Amy Anderson have endured a grueling “prep school,” leading up to what will be his greatest test — a liver transplant.

Anderson, 31, has primary sclerosing cholangitis, a disease that causes swelling, scarring and destruction of the bile ducts both inside and outside of the liver. In January, doctors told him he needed a liver transplant.

Cody’s family and friends decided to host a benefit dinner/auction with a 5K run in an effort to raise enough money to assist in expenses of his liver transplant. In these efforts, Cody’s family teamed up with a foundation group that would assist them through technical end of collections and contributions.

Given our relations with Cody and his family, I was more than happy to rally the troops and run for this cause.

Cody, his wife Amy, and the entire Anderson family are such amazing people. To see Cody face his challenges, always having a smile and sense of humor, speaks volumes of his winning character and strong spirit.

The entire community (valley wide) came out to participate in this benefit. The term “Anything For A Friend” was more than just a slogan at this event, it was the foundation of these people and there relationships with Cody and his family.

Great Salt Lake Bird Festival

Sat ,14/05/2011

Four years running, the Great Salt Lake Bird Festival has invited me to participate, introducing people to the Wild Over Wood Ducks (WOW) program, and working with the kids.

20111030-001103.jpg
In this, there is a golden opportunity as I am given the opportunity to work with these young kids in a hands-on-environment, whereby these kids are introduced to building wood duck boxes that will serve as nesting cavities.

20111030-001531.jpg
These activities provide a golden opportunity for the youth, introducing them to the outdoors in a conservation minded atmosphere.

20111030-002231.jpg
I am always impressed whenever I see scouts and their leaders taking advantage of these types of events and their resources.

An Evening With The Duckman

Wed ,20/04/2011

20111029-232211.jpg
Retired UDWR Northern Regional Office leader, Jack Renzel extended an invite for me to be the keynote speaker at the quarterly meeting of the Wasatch Audubon Society, speaking on Utah’s wood duck population and the WOW program.

20111029-233513.jpg
Prepared to give 30 minutes of informative discussion, the audience was extremely interactive and the time flew by, nearly an hours time pasted and the questions continues…20111029-233935.jpg
In the interest of time and not wanting to run to long, I gave in to the the clock, leaving opportunity for informal discussion afterward, which led to great company and and new acquaintances with truly great people.
20111029-234558.jpg
Afterwards, I was pleasures to be presented with a signed addition from Keith Evans, of his book Utah’s Featured Birds And Viewing Sites. Keith and his book are a valuable resource to our feathered friends here in the state…the evening was truly an honor to be in such great company.
